Music Includes Vibration

So maybe when my teacher said ‘there are 5 senses’ she just meant there are 5 EXTERoceptive senses. WRONG. So wrong. She left out vibration. (And the vestibular system.) Stop and think about how totally weird it is that she left out vibration . We feel vibration every day—from the car’s engine, as we walk, in music. Vibration can also arise from the inside. When we sing, it comes from both—inside and outside. Vibration can come to us through our bones, the liquid in our bodies or through the airy parts, like sinuses. The mastoid bone behind our ears is to vibration—and feet are to vibration—as eyes are to sight. Vibration is a sense we develop in utero, the first we develop and one of the last to go in people with dementia. What the heck is wrong with dominant culture that we have kicked vibration to the gutter?
